Bus Service to SFU

quote from Don MacLeod, President CAW 111 (representing Bus Drivers for Translink):

"Students are facing overcrowded buses, lengthy delays, pass-ups and inadequate service every single day and all because we are currently short at least 500 buses. On November 15 it's important we elect municipal politicians who are willing to pressure the provincial government to live up to its responsibility to improve service as quickly as possible and get more buses on the road."

The SFSS is aware that bus service to SFU is inadequate, and we are working hard to make transit services better. Check out the More Buses Now Campaign for more information.

Transit System Feedback

E-mail the SFSS about your transit experience. Are the lineups too long? Did you have a friendly bus driver that you'd like to thank? Do you have suggestions we can bring to our next meeting with Translink? Please send us an e-mail and let us know.

It is also important that Translink gets feedback directly from students about their transit experience - do this at the Translink Customer Feedback page.

Universal Transit Pass

A joint project of the SFSS, SFU and TransLink, the U-Pass is a student driven initiative, launched in the fall of 2003. Over 80% of SFU students use the Universal Transit Pass (U-Pass) which provides unlimited transit use to eligible SFU students for $26.10 per month. The U-Pass is mailed to all students enrolled in at least one eligible course two weeks before the start of each semester. Visit www.sfu.ca/upass for more information.
U-Passes are not transferable and cannot be re-sold. Violators risk fines from Translink or potentially much worse.

MobiTransit

U-Pass holders who also have an iPhone or iPod touch may be interested in the MobiTransit application - the perfect companion for Simon Fraser University (SFU) and University of British Columbia (UBC) U-Pass program. This application allows iPhone and iPod touch to query TransLink bus schedules for university routes without being connected to the Internet at all. Data is current as of January 1, 2009.
To download MobiTransit, go to the iTunes web store:

The SFSS does not own or maintain this software; for any inquiries or technical support requests please contact developer

Car Sharing (Co-operative Auto Network)

SFSS members are eligible to sign up for a personal membership in the Company Car Program of the Co-operative Auto Network (CAN) for a fee of $50 instead of the usual $500 deposit. To sign up, visit the  Cooperative Auto Network Site or call them at 604 685 1393.

If you need a car four days a week or fewer, then the Co-operative Auto Network will probably be a cost-effective and efficient alternative to owning your own car.  We highly recommend car sharing for people who already commute using alternatives like the bus, cycling or walking — or who would like to make that commitment.  Car sharing can help you change the way you use transportation, and the financial savings can make the rest of your life work better too.

Once you have signed up, you will have access to every car in the CAN fleet.  When you need a car, just log into the booking system or call the CAN office 24 hours a day to select the car you need for the times you need it.  Once your booking starts, go to the car, make your trip and return the car to the place you picked it up.  There are cars available in at least two locations on Burnaby Mountain. Repeat the process as often as you need a car, and once a month CAN will send you a bill for your usage.  The charges on this invoice pay for everything you need — the car, the parking, the insurance, the gas, and BCAA coverage — at a small fraction of what you'd pay to own the car by yourself.

Check out the Cooperative Auto Network Site to explore CAN and car sharing further.

Ride-Share SFU

Check out the Ride-Share Website for more information.

The Ride-Share program is a great way for SFU students to plan car-pool rides to SFU. Ride-Share is open to all members of the SFU community and saves participants money on parking and gas. The site uses Google Maps and some clever programming to help you find the best match for car pooling.

The SFU Ride-Share site was started by SFSS Member Greg Campbell and BASS (Business Administration Student Society).
